Young Men, Video Games, and Goal Setting - A Winning Combination?

Young Men Today Are Often Viewed In an Unfairly Negative Way
Young men today often feel betrayed and angry at what they perceive as unjust betrayals aimed at their attempts to do something... be something or someone... accomplish something or make something... design something or... , etc. Therefore, to the average onlooker, they appear to have given up on enterprise and they are portrayed as lazy, thoughtless, never-do-wells, who spend their youth sleeping, drinking, fighting, and throwing their lives and their potential away playing frivolous video games. Perhaps they are being judged just a wee bit harshly, especially on the part of 'throwing their potential away on useless video games.'
I cannot pretend to know why young men sleep so much or why they drink, or fight. But, with new jobs so hard to come by anymore, and so many young men out of work due to no fault of their own, it is understandable that they have turned to other means of passing the time. These are all things that will most likely be abandoned as the economy eases up and more young men become job-holders and contributing members of society.
The main thing that we might take exception to is the phrase, '... throwing their potential away on useless video games.' Even though playing a video game does take a certain amount of time, the young men who play them are far from '... throwing their potential away,' because it is awesome how much old-fashioned brain power is necessary to follow through to the win on many video games. These new games-and some of the older ones-require a special kind of concentration and agile hand-and-body movement just to keep from being wiped out, or left behind in the dust. None of them are for the faint of heart!
Then, we have the word 'useless' attached when many people speak of video games. Useless? Hmm, let's see! It takes a great deal of concentration to stay with a video game, as well as constant control over your slightest hand-and-body movements, and instant knowledge of what your opponent is doing-all qualities that are looked for and demanded for many professional jobs, especially in the ones that lead to top positions within many companies.
When the time arrives and job openings begin to come in again, these young masters of the video games will be on hand to take the cream of the crop. In the meantime, they will keep playing their games and honing their skills as they head into their futures.
Also, maybe so many young men still live at home because they are aware that the 'game of life' has changed since their father's generation, and they are waiting for the change to be completed before moving on. But, paradoxically, until they-as the new order of young men-decide to take their own particular stand in this new world, nothing will be changed. How do they take that stand? Not through the physical things they do.
In order for young men to help the world grow into the kind of place they'd like it to be, they need to help shape it, even as they play their video games. How do they do that? By taking an honest look at their world right now and their place in it, then projecting their vision into the future of what they'd like their world to become, and what they'd truly like their part in it to be.
There is another, hidden, element to playing video games that is not readily recognized. A great deal of thought and planning must be done beforehand if one is to 'beat' a video game. This is exactly the skill that is needed when a young man decides to become a master at goal setting. Once he has decided what he wants his future to become, all he has to do is project the same kind of thoughtful determination into goal setting that he has projected into winning video games.
If you are a young man reading this article, when you are ready to go forward to claim your part into changing this into a better world, ask yourself what skills did you develop while you were busy playing your video games. It may surprise you to know that quick wits and lightning fast movements are the main prerequisites needed to become a video game winner time after time.
Hmm! Sounds like with just a little deliberate goal planning, your generation may already be ahead of the game!
